Advisory on Cyclonic Storm ‘AMPHAN’ over Bay of Bengal

The Depression formed on 16th May, 2020 over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea intensified into the Cyclonic Storm ‘AMPHAN’ (pronounced as UM-PUN) on the same day. It has intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm today on 17 May. It is likely to move northwards and intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 12 hours(17-18th May) and further move northwards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal–Bangladesh coasts on 20th May 2020 as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm.

Under the influence of this system, moderate to heavy rain is likely over southern and eastern parts of Bhutan during the next 72 hours (18-20 May). Rest of the places can expect light to moderate rain. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty wind can be expected at isolated parts of the country during the same period.
