National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology

The National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) bid farewell to Mr. Lal Bahadur Gurung, ESP on 28 July 2020, upon the attainment of superannuation age. LB Gurung joined civil service in 1983 and served the nation for last 36 years in various capacities in the field of hydrological data collection, sediment data analysis and hydropower project feasibility studies.

Center organised a simple farewell lunch from the NCHM welfare fund with farewell gifts. Mr. Gurung was a simple and dedicated civil servant, who served in nooks and corners of the country. His last posting was at Bjizam Hydrological Station, Trongsa. He has five children.

The Center Management thanked him for the dedicated services to Tsawa sum and also wish him and his family best of luck in their future endeavours.

Story of Mr. Lal Bahadur Gurung,

Mr. Lal Bahadur Gurung is 56 years old (now) and he joined Civil Service in 1983 as a Gauge and Discharge Reader (G&D Reader) erstwhile under Survey and Investigation, Division of Power, MTI. He was immediately posted in newly opened G&D site at Uirchhu under Pemagatsel Dzongkhag. He was responsible to observed and record water levels of the station that was installed to study the feasibility of hydropower project.

From 1984 to 1988 he was transferred from Urichhu, Pemagatsel to Rafe Mangdechhu G&D Site, Samtelling, Trongsa that was opened for hydro-meteorological data collection of feasibility study of hydropower project on Mangdechhu.

From 1989 to 1991, worked at Wangdi Rapid Hydrologic Station on Punatsangchhu that was setup for hydrologic data collection of planning and designing of Punatsangchu Hydropower Project.

Mr. L B Gurung was one of the 42 staff who attend the first batch training on “Hydro-meteorological Course” conducted in Bhutan under the Bhutan Power System Master Plan (PSMP) project in 1991.

After completion of mini hydel study on Nagnichhu by Center Water Commission (CWC), India, he was transferred to transferred to Trashiding, Tangsibji, Trongsa for hydro-met data collection of Nagnichhu and Chendbjichhu from 1992-1998.

From Trashiding he was transferred to Bjizam Hydrological Station on Mangdechhu in1999. He worked in Bjizam for last 20 years until superannuation 2020.

Mr. LB Gurung is passionate, hardworking and dedicated civil servant, who served in remote nook and corner of the country along the river’s valleys. He has immensely contributed for development of completed and ongoing hydropower projects like 720 WM Mangdechhu Hydropower Project, 118 MW Tangsibji Hydro Energy Limited (THyE) Project, Puantsancghu Hydropower Project (PHAP-I and II).

He received the Civil Servant Award from the His Majesty for 20 and 30 years for his dedicated services to the Tsa wa sum.
