About SmartMet

Smartmet is a software tool for visualizing and editing the meteorological data developed by Finnish Meteorological Institute. The tool provides the forecaster to modify the numerical weather model (Weather Research and Forecasting Model) output taking into account all the available observations and the meteorologist’s own expertise.

Finnish Meteorological Institute deployed Smartmet Weather Information System for the National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology, on 2017 in UNDP funded NAPA-project. Training of the system has been carried out in two parts during 2018 with funding of World Bank project. Smartmet have been operational since November, 2018.

SmartMet gives the forecasters the possibility to change the model data (i.e. improve data) and to bring out the improved data from parameter to parameter as grid formatted information. From these improved grid-files, which the forecaster has edited, it’s possible to create tailor-made weather forecasts for unlimited amount of users in the most economical and efficient way.
